Why Communication is Important For Your WelLbeing

I think that communication is the process of understanding and sharing meaning and one of the most important tools we have to help us through life, especially when we are more isolated as individuals, as we currently are.

Communication can be broken down into three types:

  1. Verbal - in which I listen to a person to understand their meaning.

  2. Written - in which I read their meaning.

  3. Non-verbal - in which I observe the person and infer meaning.

Communication is key to understand one another.

It is very important for me when I take on new clients and interact with them throughout their journey to wellness because when both sides communicate effectively, I will be able to deliver results accurately. Communication improves productivity on both sides and promotes team building. After all, you (the client) and me - we are a team!

For a success story to unfold in the communication process, certain steps should be emphasized. It may seem that these rules apply mostly in the workplace, but you’d be surprised how much of your daily communication processes with anyone - family, friends, neighbors, that friendly grocery store owner, can be improved if we just started putting more attention to how we express ourselves.

Being a good listener is very important. Personally, I feel like it enables me to acquire all the necessary information to be able to approach each client individually, offering bespoke wellness advice and nutrition plans.

Another important factor is the body language - eye contact, hand gestures, and tone of voice - they all add different colors to my messages. Depending on the point that I need to get across, sometimes I will need to be firm, other times I will be soft - it all depends on what the situation reads to me.

Mental clarity plays a huge part since I need to be able to send a specific message - this helps convey transparency and trust.

Being able to understand someone else’s perspective is crucial. Empathy is the key element of developing emotional intelligence. The expression “you have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes before you judge” means not only having empathy but also having boundaries and being able to recognize when I need to use them. This also teaches those around me to strengthen their own boundaries.

Always keep an open mind because life is not set in stone. Talking from my own perspective as a wellness coach, there are times when my client has different thoughts to mine and we work to align them. It’s about being receptive to a wide variety of different information. One thing I believe my clients manage to achieve on this journey with me is stepping outside of their comfort zone.

Respect is a two-way street and it is so important in today’s art of communication. If I am spending my energy and time to help, I do expect respect and I will reciprocate it in abundance.

I think that communication is the most effective tool to help foster good relationships and even health.

No man is an island, we need human interactions to create social relationships that are so crucial for our health - it’s a scientific fact, not only my personal opinion based on a lifetime of experience.
