Supplements: How to Choose the Right One For You

The purpose of a supplement is to support your daily nutrition, not to replace it.

If you’re eating a healthy and balanced diet, you probably don’t need to take vitamin supplements since you’re already getting all the essential vitamins and minerals.

A lifestyle based on natural whole foods supports the body’s needs with sufficient nutrients to give you the daily energy to work and play.

Supplements are usually used to make up for the poor nutritional content of the many foods you eat - especially the processed and refined products with a long shelf life that are packed with preservatives and artificial ingredients.

Extra chemicals in processed foods make it harder for your body to function well and reduce the nutrient content of foods dramatically. Any unnatural ingredients can put a strain on your health so you need more key nutrients because what you are getting is simply not enough.

It is also important to mention that stress depletes many vital nutrients such as Magnesium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B5 & B6, and Zinc. These key nutrients are essential to maintain healthy energy levels and help with your metabolism, and ironically, to protect you against the harmful side effects of stress.

At some stage in life, you’ll need supplements for specific conditions or symptoms. You may need extra help to restore health and wellbeing but these extra vitamins should be taken in moderation and only for a short period of time.

An example of a situation where it may be necessary to introduce supplements to your diet is your gut health.

Probiotics and bio-fermented foods can vastly improve and nurture gut microbiome.

I happen to like Glow Inner Beauty Essential which is specifically designed for gut health collagen synthesis and contains Vitamin B3, biotin and pro-vitamin A to supplement digestive health, improve skin and overall wellness.

How should you choose your supplements?

With the availability of supplements at an all-time high, I look to the products with a natural affinity to the body and mind. Think about your diet, try and find natural ingredients to make up for any deficiencies and then, consider adding extra vitamins and minerals on top of that - not as a meal replacement.

I’m a fan of cold-milled products such as Linwoods Milled CO-Q10 Flaxseed, Almonds, Brazil & Walnuts. Co-enzyme Q10 helps boost energy levels, immune system and productivity within the cells of the mitochondria. The addition of almonds, walnuts and Brazil nuts is an excellent source of nutrients for overall health.

Flaxseed mixes can easily be incorporated into your daily meals and this is what makes the absorption and process of nutrients work best.

When it comes to protein powders don’t use them as an easy and popular supplement to support muscle synthesis. Often a high ranked protein powder will have anti-inflammatory qualities and will contain antioxidants, immune boosters and probiotics.

Taken with a balanced diet of vegetable, fruits and plant milk or water it can help to naturally increase the absorption of the nutrients and to work more efficiently because you have eaten.

I also think it’s time to drop the supplements with fillers or bulking agents and use ethically sourced ingredients to maintain health.

Last but not least fish supplements. They are an important part of daily support, especially if you’re not a fan of fish or seafood in its natural form. A daily dose of healthy Omega 3 fats contributes to a healthy heart, brain & vision function, it helps your metabolism and boosts your energy.
